According to British X-Files, a U.S. spay plane was sure they were to crash with a UFO at 35,000 feet.

The UFO broke off as two other U.S. F-14 and a British RAF Phantom came to help.

All radar, tapes, transcripts, etc. were removed from file.

An interesting 90 minute long encounter (although I couldn't see any reference to May Day being invoked in the article).

General thoughts:

* The sceptic Dr David Clarke seems to have replaced Pope as the Go-To Guy on these kinds of write ups.

*I am inclined to agree with him - here -that there is no conspiracy of silence in this particular case - just bureaucratic sluggishness.

* The object is said to have featured up to 20 `flashing lights`. Once again, we have to ask what on earth would UFOs need with flashing lights? Our own aircraft only use flashing lights to draw attention to themselves - for air travel safety.

* Reports of this kind mostly still get publicity from outlets like `The Sun` - which means that a whole load of thinking people are simply never going to see them. (Thanks, Nyx!)

Your "what on earth question" is based on an assumption of little or no difference between the UFOs traffic and our aircraft traffic - we really don't see a case where our plane is equipped with 20 lights to be seen when flashing.

But allow a little doubt into your comparison: If the sighting of UFOs is comparable to the sighting of our craft, why there is so much interest in what MoD stashes away? Isn't it because UFOs are those "unlike any other" objects in the sky that can jump start human curiosity?

Here is what lights are alternatively used for:

Yes. You can send a message. Unlike the Morse code, it is the number of flashing lights that a part of the message is composed of. It is based on this comparison featuring opposites:

Light On is to Together as Light Off is to Apart

To confirm the basic data of a genuine sighting starting with the year, the above comparison is used thusly:

Light On is to 1982 as Light Off is to 1 9 8 2

In the case of Light Off, you see 1 and 9 and 8 and 2. Since "and" means "+" (one and one is two <=> 1 + 1 = 2), the spaces between the digits get filled accordingly:

1 9 8 2 => 1+9+8+2

Then the UFO flight director completes the 1+9+8+2 message

1+9+8+2 = 20

and tells the mechanics to install 20 lights on the alien craft.

So, you see that hoaxing a UFO sighting isn't that easy... Actually it would have been, if we had not evolved from banana-gobbling monkeys.
