If a planet similar to ours was found, it raises an interesting social problem.

Who would go there ?

If you look around at the mess we have made here, how would we prevent the same thing happening again ?

I would refer people to K M Robinson's Mars trilogy as a good example of how easy it is to destroy the future.

Cliff, your views....

Hi Hal.

I'm preparing for an ice storm. Expecting power outages over the next few days....fun , fun. I'll weigh in more as time allows...Gotta love Missouri weather...

To paraphrase one of the west's great political leaders,"What difference would it make?"
IF, a planet had some form of life above one cell level then the argument could be made that its welfare should be considered.
However humans like any other animal have as much right to expand their territory as any other.
And no one knows what the future may hold.

People spend to damned much time worrying about what might be if humans take a hand in anything. We ain't doing that bad considering what it is we're expected to do.

The world as a whole isn't in that bad a shape! Other than political situations, the Earth is running along just fine. Just the right amount of bad weather, Earth Quakes, floods, hurricanes, twisters, volcanic action.
It's humming along nicely thank you very much!

Why would you use a work of fiction to try to predict the outcome of something that hasn't happened or maybe never will ?

Cliff,

Good to see Space-X got their rocket into space.

Our biggest problem, should we find a habitable planet, would be a social one. That's why I have asked Lone if he had read the books I referred to.

But very simply, should the initial settlers all be of one religion, mixed religions, or all atheists ?

Yep. Spacex has come a long way in a short time. That was pinpoint accuracy ! Great job ! smiley

I'm still thinking about your question. I'm not sure I have an answer...

It's a good question though and something which should be considered.

No HAL, I haven't read that book. Sounds interesting. Wonder if I can get it on my Kindle?

Question on your mention of religion. Has that made a difference in any other space endeavor? Are you of the opinion that religion might interfere with the mission?

Lone,

I agree that on current missions the mix of countries and religions has not, as far as we know, been a problem.

But at the end of their participation all the people involved went back to where they originated from. Back to their original customs and lifestyles. They were, essentially, just working away from home for a while.

An attempt to place humans on Mars would be very different. There is a chance that the first people there would be on a one way mission.

What would happen if one a particular group (Muslims, to use the usual scapegoats) were to claim the planet for Islam ? Or even America to claim it for the USA ?

If you can get hold of a copy of even the first part of the trilogy (Red Mars) then you will see what I mean.

The problems start right at the beginning.

It really is worth the effort.

It's anyone's guess at this point as to who will deliver them. NASA ? SpaceX ? Other ? About 2030-2040 or so is when they plan on making this happen...( I think )

This is the "MARS GENERATION" wink
