xx What did my friend photograph
« Thread started on: Jul 31st, 2003, 5:27pm »

A friend showed me some pics he took with a digital camera on Monday 28th July near Derby UK.The pics were taken over 6 mins. When he checked pics later he spotted a white line in each pic.We are trying to decide what it is-the line appears to be verticle and as time passes it gets closer to the ground. When I say a white line it isnt long like a jets vapour trail but pretty short. we have zoomed in on his PC and neither end seems to have an aircraft at the end.It looks really strange as its so upright and stands out a mile as all other things in the sky were well-clouds.
Does anyone know what it could be or any good pics on the net of things like this?
thanks

Its a shame nobody has given feedback on what my friend saw or of possible websites to view images which may match.
I wish I could post a picture of what he saw but I neither have a copy of the pic or have a reliable internet connection to post it which is a great shame.
He now thinks what he saw was a meteorite coming in as he had read something about Mars being close causing more to come into our atmosphere.I said I thought it was some kind of Phenomenomenon (dont know how to spell it)

It's very difficult to give an opinion on simply your desciption. If it's any help, there's been reports of neon tube type objects in the sky. The description usually is that the object looks like a neon tube standing vertically and moving about in that relative posture. A white line could be a trick of of light on the camera lens or defect in the medium (if you printed it out). It's hard to say anything more without seeing it. Your friend may be right in thinking it was a meteorite.

Thanks for the feedback. In a strange way I guess you could describe what appeared in the pic as a neon tube.
I doubt its a fault with the chaps camera or printer as he uses good stuff.Actually his main reason for printing off the pics was he saw the item in the images on his camera.
How would I go about posting an image?
This chap is into computers so with luck has a website-I may try and get him to post a pic on it so I can link to it.
Thanks again.

Well I now have copies of the pictures my friend has taken.
I have looked at them further.I dont know but to me it looks alot like the jet trails of a high flying jet although far shorter than iam used to seeing. What do others think.
I will try and post a picture although with the net connection I have things may not appear.
Thanks for the interest.

Hi plantzman,
from the picture you posted this could be one of many different objects. Meteorite, aircraft ... etc. Resolution just is not close and clear enough to make a determination. To me it looks like a typical con trail, but who knows. Polished aluminum airplanes of the single engine prop driven type can fly close to stall speed and appear to be not moving to the observer on the ground. This looks out of place to most people that do not realize that these aircraft can do this. Then when they start to speed up it does not look natural. I know this is not what is taking place in your picture though it does illustrate one of the many things to be considered in identification of possible extra terrestrial craft.

I agree that at the extreme distance it appears to be from the camera, it looks like a contrail or meteor and not a neon tube UFO. A short contrail like this can be just the application of afterburners in a climbing fighter plane.

At this juncture, I would say, "Move along folks...there's nothing more to see here."

Yes sorry the pic isnt very clear but the chap who took the picture wasnt aiming for the item in question-he saw it afterwards. When I looked at the pic myself I thought straight away its a con trail but then I thought to myself it looks very short.I also noted that there is a darker end and a lighter end.By that I mean at the bottom it seems to be thinning having been in the air for longer. So I would surgest if it was a con trail the aircraft would be at the darker end at the top however just to confuse things the chap who took the pics said they were taken over a 6 minute period and as time passed the item in question got closer to the ground which dosnt link in with the aircraft being at the top.

Well...it could be something else but unless an expert on images like this gets involved, we're just guessing. I've see short contrails from fighters that headed downward because they are at high altitude and heading towards the horizon. They are capable of dives also. Was this over the ocean or towards the ocean by the way? At high altitude over water, they can test their abilities but are restricted over land.

The picture was taken over the UK East Midlands pretty much as far from the sea as can be.Also a fair distance from the nearest military base (I couldnt name the closest).
My thoughts were just like yours-that as the high flying jet approached the horizon it looked like it was moving towards the ground. But then as I said the darker thicker end of the trail is upper most and therefore pointing away from the ground and away from the horizon.Having seen all the pics its pretty much the same in them all.Unless of course the pictures show a different aircraft over the time period flying at high altitude. In later pics the trail being closer to the horizon as its a new aircraft appearing. Its a thought.
Bizzarly something on this chaps PC has now gone wrong and deleted ALL his photographs including the ones I mention.I now appear to have the only ones as he burnt three onto a disk for me to look at.He is blaming it on a problem with his Norton software.
